Joris en Natalie Van Almenkerk en familie organiseerden een warme ontvangst voor enkele honderden gasten op hun indrukwekkende nieuwe wine estate in Elgin Valley. In de jongste editie van "Platters' Wine Guide" kregen twee van hun wijnen een vier sterren - rating.

Asa, the new voice of Afro-folk

A young Nigerian singer by the name of Asa (pronounced Asha) is currently causing a stir with a debut eponymous album released on the French label Naïve. Asa’s subtle mix of soul, folk and pop, cleverly interwoven with her African roots, has already evoked comparisons with Tracy Chapman and Ayo.

At the beginning of 2007, the young singer went into the studio and spent six weeks recording with Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo,a blind multi-instrumentalist she has worked with for three years now. Her debut 11-track album is simply called Asa, "because all the songs on it are pieces of the puzzle that make up my personality." Featuring impeccable percussion, a funky Hammond organ, reggae-infused bass and contributions from celebrity flautist Magic Malik, Asa’s debut album contains two stand-out tracks: Jailer, a song about "the irony of oppression, not just political or racial oppression, but the kind that operates in everyday life" and Fire In The Mountain - a melody which has every bit as much chart-topping potential as anything by her Afro-folk sister Ayo!

WORST DROUGHT EVER IN KENYA

East Africa: millions face hunger and poverty amid drought and food prices hike.

Kenya faces its worst drought for more than a decade, with crops and livestock destroyed.

The country relies on hydroelectric power, but its electricity is now being rationed as the dams dry up. In rural areas to the north, children are becoming malnourished because there is no milk or meat.

But ahead of the UN's climate change summit in Copenhagen, many believe this is more than an immediate humanitarian crisis.

Net terug uit Kenia voor een reportage over het effect van de klimaatopwarming op de locale bevolking. Meer bepaald in Samburuland, ten noorden van de stad Isiolo, is de situatie bijzonder alarmerend. Zowat 90 % van de veestapel stierf er door gebrek aan water en voedsel.

Samburu Chief George gidste ons naar de ergst getroffen gebieden in de regio.

Op de afbeeldingen hieronder wordt er breed gelachen voor de foto, maar het dagelijkse leven in de streek was/is bittere ernst.

Chief George probeert een verzwakte koe tevergeefs terug op de poten te krijgen. Enkele minuten later bezweek ze.

De hoogste berg van Afrika, de Kilimanjaro (5895 m), enkele jaren terug nog met een flinke witte kraag, ligt er nu zo goed als sneeuwvrij bij.

Richard filmt Samburu-vrouwen die wanhopig schreeuwen om regen. Elke dag vechten ze om wat maïs meel in de pot.
