INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS
Traditional leader and healer of the Khomani San of the Kalahari, Oom Dawid Kruiper, has died.
Traditional leader and healer of the Khomani San of the Kalahari, Oom Dawid Kruiper, died in an Upington hospital on Wednesday.
The 71-year-old was transferred from the Gordonia regional hospital to the Upington Medi-Clinic after his condition deteriorated on Tuesday night.
He was in a critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit, and died just before noon on Wednesday.
A family representative, Anna Festus, said Kruiper was doing better over the weekend, but his condition suddenly deteriorated on Tuesday night.
She said the group Friends of the Bushmen undertook to pay Kruiper’s medical expenses.
Festus said prior to Kruiper's death, well wishes were sent from across the world such as the Permanent Forum for Indigenous Groups of the United Nations in New York, and from friends and family in London.
Kruiper was well known for his acting role as a tracker in the 1989 movie, The Gods Must Be Crazy II.
He addressed the United Nations in Geneva on the rights of indigenous people in 1994, and led the way for land claims in South Africa for the San people.
Some 40 000 hectares of land were handed back to the San in March 1999.
He made headlines when he hitch-hiked from the Kalahari to Cape Town in 2004 to see and talk to former South African president Thabo Mbeki.
Kruiper was involved in the development and restoring of the San languages.
Secretary-general of the Khoi San Gauteng and Provinces of the North Council, Gordon Cassim, said Kruiper's death was a great loss to the Khoi San nation and South Africa.
“May his soul rest in peace, our chief, our prayers are extended to the Kruiper family, the Boesman community and friends,” he said. - Sapa

AFRICA BURN 2012

Afrika Burns Creative Projects (AfrikaBurn) was created in 2007 as a Not-For-Profit Company, with the intention that it would serve as a vehicle for the co-ordination of a South African Burning Man regional event.
The event has been running since 2007, with all events to date held on a private farm called Stonehenge, which is adjacent to the Tankwa Karoo National Park. The farm is very isolated, as it is situated half way along the R355, an 250km long untarred road between Calvinia and Ceres.
The event was originally called AfrikaBurns, however due to concerns about the name having possible negative connotations there was a public call for proposals on 15 May 2008. On 16 July 2008 the new name, AfrikaBurn, was officially announced via email. The new name preserves the identity of the event, but deals with possible negative interpretations changing the name from something ('burns') that happens to Africa, to something (a 'burn') that happens in Africa.
In 2010 the event was moved earlier in the year because the autumn weather is better suited to the event, and so that a public holiday (or in some years two) could be included in that dates. It also means that it is not so close to Burning Man, which will hopefully increase the number of foreign attendees.
The dates for AfrikaBurn 2013 are Wednesday 1 May - Monday 6 May 2013. The 1st of May is a public holiday.

SAN CLAN
As a regional Burning Man event, AfrikaBurn adheres to the ten principles of Burning Man. Among these are the Leave No Trace philosophy, radical self-expression, radical self-reliance, and communal effort. [1]
By analogy to the Man at Burning Man, the main sculpture at the event is called the San Clan. It is designed to look like a San rock art glyph of a group of people. The intention is to convey the idea of unity and community at the event.

Theme camps are one of the key components of vibrant regional Burning Man events. Theme camps are established by participants to enhance the experience for all participants.

The theme for any AfrikaBurn is intended as a point of possible connection, or inspiration. The theme is not enforced, and art or performance is not necessarily in line with the theme. For a list of past years' themes, please see the table in the Historysection above.
Major theme camps from the last few years include "Heartspace", "The Desert Rose", "Partycipation", "Amadeadly Disco" and "Burning Mail"

Africa to send troops, food parcels to UK as riots spread

Africa to send troops, food parcels to UK as riots spread

ETHIOPIA. The African Union today adopted a unilateral resolution to deploy army troops and care packages to England as looting and violence spread from London to other major cities. Spokesperson Charity Khumalo said “We can no longer stand by while these savages tear themselves apart.”
The AU, meeting today in an emergency session to discuss the ongoing rioting in the UK, has declared that they will do “everything in their power to help bring civilisation to England”.
“It’s just so sad, you know?” said Khumalo, speaking from the organisation’s HQ in Addis Ababa. “Sitting here and watching them on TV while their society implodes. We cannot in good conscience remain idle and let it happen.”
The AU has announced a range of initiatives that Africans can get involved with to help alleviate the misery of the English.
“For instance, we have launched an ‘Adopt an English child’ programme,” Khumalo explained, showing journalists brochures featuring the faces of English kids. “If you donate a mere R50 a month, you can see to it that sweet little Johnny from Peckham receives a basic education, a pack of condoms and a pair of pimpin’ Nikes.”
Khumalo also said that the AU would be parachuting in dentists along with army troops as part of a ‘Feel better about yourselves, Brits!’ initiative.
“You can understand why they’re turning on each other,” the spokesperson told journalists. “You look in the mirror and you see teeth untouched by modern dentistry. It’s heartbreaking enough to make anyone put a brick through a Starbucks.”
The organisation also plans to air-drop care packages on major UK cities.
“Vegetables, mainly,” Khumalo confirmed. “We’re sending them vegetables and toothpaste.”
The AU’s flagship event, however, will be a star-studded rock concert to be held in Johannesburg, with all proceeds going towards the establishment of mobile libraries around the UK. Artists ranging from Mafikizolo to Steve Hofmeyr have pledged to perform at the show.
“As a humanitarian, it’s the least I can do,” Hofmeyr said yesterday. “I look at those photos of the adorable little beasts knifing each other in fights over looted X-Boxes and I want to hug them and give them a nice hot cup of Milo.”
Meanwhile, the week’s events have seen terrified South Africans in London and Manchester packing their bags for home.
“This country is going to the dogs, dude,” said Werner du Preez, a gap-year student from Johannesburg. “I’ve been offered a nice little two-bedroom place in Hillbrow where I can feel safe again

TRAILER 'A Bushman Odyssey'

Trailer Documentary Film by One Time Films & Karl Symons

A BUSHMAN ODYSSEY is the epic story of one Bushman family’s struggle to reconnect with their ancestral soul after surviving three generations of colonial genocide, apartheid dispossession, and post-apartheid social reorganization.

Dawid Kruiper, 76, and his extended family are one of South Africa’s only Bushman families to survive the genocide with unbroken links to their ancestral past.

A Bushman Odyssey is a riveting soul-journey through the African wilderness, following the Kruipers’ poignant and at times heartbreaking return to their ancestors’ lands in their Kgalagadi heartland.
