KURU DANCE FESTIVAL BOTSWANA 2012

The Kuru Dance Festival is organized by the Kuru Cultural Center and takes place every August. The festival celebrates the traditional dance style of Botswana’s first people, who are referred to as Basarwa, San or Bushmen. The Basarwa were pushed out into the Kalahari Desert by settlements and animal preservations. The Kuru Dance Festival also hosts San groups from Namibia and occasionally South Africa. By institutionalizing the practice of traditional dance in the form of an annual festival, the Kuru Cultural Center has attempted to give the San people an opportunity to display their cultural heritage.

SNOW CAUSES HAVOC IN SOUTH AFRICA

Snow on smooth shaped summit near Matroosberg

Latest on Snow caused road closures N routes/roads on 7th August 2012

Many parts of the country were covered in snow today. The South African weather service says today is possibly the first time that snow has fallen in all nine provinces. The weather service says it's not unusual to have snowfall just before spring arrives.

And while it's picturesque and led to much fun, the snow wreaked havoc on the roads. In the Eastern and Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal several passes remain closed. Several border posts between South Africa and Lesotho have also been closed until further notice.

In Johannesburg, one of the most famous landmarks, Sentech, was obscured from view by the snow. A warning was sent out to motorists to be extra vigilant.
The last time Johannesburg experienced a substantial snowfall was in June 2007. Before that, the city last saw a considerable amount of snow in 1981.
By Tuesday afternoon, the South African Weather Service said eight of the nine provinces - all but Limpopo - were experiencing snow.
Johannesburg recorded temperatures of just below two degrees Celsius. In the city centre, thin layers of snow were draped over sidewalks and cars.
A car guard outside the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court, who only gave his first name, said he had lived in the city for four years and had never seen snow there.

FUNERAL DAWID KRUIPER

WE TRAVELLED to the Kalahari for Dawid Kruiper's state funeral on June 30, 2012, and stayed on with the Kruiper family and Bushman community after everyone had left, sharing their sense of loss, and mourning, and their determination to continue walking the path to the dream Dawid pioneered and wished his descendants to realise.

Dawid's dream remains alive amongst his family and Bushman followers, and with us as film-makers. This dream is embodied in Dawid's will to return to the wilderness with his people, to record the truth of his ancestral story, and to regenerate his ancestors' traditional knowledge through initiatives such as the veldskool he pioneered on the Bushman lands inside the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

One of Dawid's last wishes was for the often hidden truths of the Kruiper family's ancestral story in the Kgalagadi wilderness to be recorded so his descendants could know their origins, and to place on record the Bushman version of history so often overlooked by the historians of cultures which dominated and exterminated the Bushman peoples of Southern Africa. He was confident that he would achieve this through recording his story for A BUSHMAN ODYSSEY and in the book to be published by Patricia Glyn.

Dawid's funeral was a huge event attended by a wide diversity of fellow Bushmen and friends, Nama and KhoiSan groups, government officials and a police honour guard, churchfolk, journalists, NGO representatives and admirers. The footage we filmed at the funeral and with Dawid's family afterward will form a moving and poignant part of the story we tell in A BUSHMAN ODYSSEY.

Dawid was buried on Witdraai farm, on the Khomani land claim which he piloted to fruition in 1999.
Dawid Kruiper leaves a powerful social and spiritual legacy which we honour as we proceed with post-production.

A BUSHMAN ODYSSEY is scheduled for completion by early November. We will upload selected clips during the edit process.

We are trying to organise a trip with the Kruiper family to the Kuru San Dance Festival in Botswana next month, during which the family would receive spiritual healing during a traditional San/Bushman healing dance ceremony. Costs are however a concern and we are trying to raise further funds for this journey.

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS
Traditional leader and healer of the Khomani San of the Kalahari, Oom Dawid Kruiper, has died.
Traditional leader and healer of the Khomani San of the Kalahari, Oom Dawid Kruiper, died in an Upington hospital on Wednesday.
The 71-year-old was transferred from the Gordonia regional hospital to the Upington Medi-Clinic after his condition deteriorated on Tuesday night.
He was in a critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit, and died just before noon on Wednesday.
A family representative, Anna Festus, said Kruiper was doing better over the weekend, but his condition suddenly deteriorated on Tuesday night.
She said the group Friends of the Bushmen undertook to pay Kruiper’s medical expenses.
Festus said prior to Kruiper's death, well wishes were sent from across the world such as the Permanent Forum for Indigenous Groups of the United Nations in New York, and from friends and family in London.
Kruiper was well known for his acting role as a tracker in the 1989 movie, The Gods Must Be Crazy II.
He addressed the United Nations in Geneva on the rights of indigenous people in 1994, and led the way for land claims in South Africa for the San people.
Some 40 000 hectares of land were handed back to the San in March 1999.
He made headlines when he hitch-hiked from the Kalahari to Cape Town in 2004 to see and talk to former South African president Thabo Mbeki.
Kruiper was involved in the development and restoring of the San languages.
Secretary-general of the Khoi San Gauteng and Provinces of the North Council, Gordon Cassim, said Kruiper's death was a great loss to the Khoi San nation and South Africa.
“May his soul rest in peace, our chief, our prayers are extended to the Kruiper family, the Boesman community and friends,” he said. - Sapa

AFRICA BURN 2012

Afrika Burns Creative Projects (AfrikaBurn) was created in 2007 as a Not-For-Profit Company, with the intention that it would serve as a vehicle for the co-ordination of a South African Burning Man regional event.
The event has been running since 2007, with all events to date held on a private farm called Stonehenge, which is adjacent to the Tankwa Karoo National Park. The farm is very isolated, as it is situated half way along the R355, an 250km long untarred road between Calvinia and Ceres.
The event was originally called AfrikaBurns, however due to concerns about the name having possible negative connotations there was a public call for proposals on 15 May 2008. On 16 July 2008 the new name, AfrikaBurn, was officially announced via email. The new name preserves the identity of the event, but deals with possible negative interpretations changing the name from something ('burns') that happens to Africa, to something (a 'burn') that happens in Africa.
In 2010 the event was moved earlier in the year because the autumn weather is better suited to the event, and so that a public holiday (or in some years two) could be included in that dates. It also means that it is not so close to Burning Man, which will hopefully increase the number of foreign attendees.
The dates for AfrikaBurn 2013 are Wednesday 1 May - Monday 6 May 2013. The 1st of May is a public holiday.

SAN CLAN
As a regional Burning Man event, AfrikaBurn adheres to the ten principles of Burning Man. Among these are the Leave No Trace philosophy, radical self-expression, radical self-reliance, and communal effort. [1]
By analogy to the Man at Burning Man, the main sculpture at the event is called the San Clan. It is designed to look like a San rock art glyph of a group of people. The intention is to convey the idea of unity and community at the event.

Theme camps are one of the key components of vibrant regional Burning Man events. Theme camps are established by participants to enhance the experience for all participants.

The theme for any AfrikaBurn is intended as a point of possible connection, or inspiration. The theme is not enforced, and art or performance is not necessarily in line with the theme. For a list of past years' themes, please see the table in the Historysection above.
Major theme camps from the last few years include "Heartspace", "The Desert Rose", "Partycipation", "Amadeadly Disco" and "Burning Mail"
